Brussels, 18 January 2024 — A coalition of political figures, led by BIC's President and EU's Former Representative for the Middle East Peace Process, Ambassador Marc Otte, and Members of the European Parliament Mounir SATOURI, Tineke STRIK, Barry ANDREWS, and Matjaž NEMEC, has issued a compelling Op-Ed calling for a sustained ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank.

The Op-Ed, titled "A Ceasefire in Gaza and the Day After", underscores the urgency of forging a lasting peace and alleviating the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. It emphasizes the paramount importance of a sustained ceasefire, providing respite for humanitarian aid and creating an environment conducive to meaningful negotiations.

The publication highlights the increasing regional risks and calls for the EU to play a more decisive role in facilitating a long-term conflict resolution. The coalition criticizes the EU's current lack of political leadership and advocates for a united front with a robust consensus among member states.

In addressing post-conflict scenarios, the Op-Ed emphasizes the need for a coordinated and comprehensive approach to reconstructing governance structures.

Furthermore, the coalition stresses the significance of accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, urging the EU to support the International Criminal Court in investigating and addressing these issues.

The Op-Ed concludes with an urgent appeal for the EU's unified position towards an immediate, sustainable, and enduring ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank ahead of today's vote at the European Parliament plenary session on the situation in Gaza. The coalition is calling for a cessation of hostilities that not only addresses the current crisis but also lays the groundwork for lasting peace in the region.
