The BIC welcomes the recent developments in Libya following the UN-led Libyan Political Dialogue Forum selecting a new transitional unified executive authority to establish conditions for future elections, currently scheduled for December 2021. This will be a necessary foundation for the holding of any credible elections, and sets important precedents such as a commitment to at least 30% women's representation. However, there are some considerations to address. The BIC's Political Analyst Ben Lowings said "While  necessary as a base-level condition for any elections, we must be cautious that the new authority doesn't repeat the mistakes of the GNA, themselves established in 2015 as a supposedly non-partisan transitional authority that became politicized and in power for five years. Along with the bare-minimum of forbidding members from standing in upcoming elections, safeguards against possible exploitations of power will be essential in the coming months."
