The BIC has taken notice of the appointment of Ba N’Daou as Interim-President of Mali during its transition. We welcome the effort to launch the transition and the appointment of a civilian as Interim-President. However, we call for vigilance as a large portion of decision-making power remains in the hands of the military, especially considering the leader of the junta, Assimi Goïta, retains power as Vice-President. The BIC's Political Analyst Ben Lowings said: "Mali needs to ensure that there is a clear tangible distinction between the political executive and the military for a credible and sustainable transition towards democracy. The appointment of N'Daou is an important first step, now efforts should be made to ensure that undue military influence in the executive is minimized moving forward."
