EU-Afghanistan Event

Event will be held on 17 November at the Egmont Institute at 15h00 until 16h30

On 17 November 2021, the Brussels International Center is organizing a hybrid event in collaboration with the Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations titled “The Resurgence of the Taliban: Plotting a new EU course of Action for Afghanistan” that will bring policymakers, practitioners, and analysts together to discuss the recent takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban and the different strategic objectives the European Union should take in response.

This event will provide a platform to discuss some of the missteps and failures that led to the collapse of the Ghani administration, the emerging security challenges in Afghanistan, and the major geopolitical impacts in the wider region. There will be particular emphasis on what the ramifications of the Taliban takeover will be for European nations, as well as how the EU should configure its ‘dealing with, but not officially recognising’ relationship with the Taliban.

The event will be moderated by Shada Islam, BIC Senior Commentator on Geopolitics, and will gather high-level speakers, including the Former Afghan Ambassador to the US, Amb. Roya Rahmani, and EU’s Deputy Head of Mission to Afghanistan, Mr. Arnault Pauwel. Several high-level representatives will also attend the conference in-person, including from the European External Action Service (EEAS), European Commission, United Nations Office for Peace and Security, and the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The BIC and Egmont Institute will prepare a discussion paper a few days after the event to reflect on the main topics addressed and propose forward-thinking recommendations to policy-makers and international stakeholders.
